The much anticipated international sporting event have finally arrived! Starting off the nearly 3-week period of international sporting competitions, the opening ceremony was held the evening of July 23rd at the newly constructed National Stadium. This marked the official start of 339 events in a total of 33 competitions, the largest number in Olympic history!
Tokyo makes another mark in history as it became the sixth city to host the Olympic Games more than once. This year, Tokyo joins Athens, Paris, London (three time host), and Los Angeles in this small club of repeating host cities.
Despite the name, ‘Tokyo Olympics,’ not all of the events will be held within the Tokyo Metropolis. In addition to Tokyo, 9 other regions in Japan will host events for the Games, including Chiba, Saitama, Kanagawa, Shizuoka, Fukushima, Yamanashi, Miyagi, Ibaraki, and Hokkaido Prefectures. Normally, this would be wonderful news for sports lovers around the world, but as most (if not all) of these areas will disallow spectators due to Covid-19. As a result, sports fans will have to enjoy the competitions from home.
We know it’s not the most ideal situation, but we wish the athletes the best, and hope all of you will give them your support as well!
