Become a robot and engage in a real battle!

Tokyo Tower is a well-loved landmark of the city. When I heard that one of the largest digital amusement parks in Japan can be found in Foot Town directly underneath the tower, I knew I had to check it out. Opened in April 2022, RED° TOKYO TOWER is quickly becoming a popular destination where visitors can enjoy attractions that combine cutting-edge virtual reality and video technologies with real-world experiences. The entrance, where the ticket sales and other services take place, is on the 3rd floor of Foot Town. I purchased a 1Day Passport, which allows unlimited play, and eagerly stepped inside!

As I passed through the futuristic entrance, surrounded by video on LED displays and 3D sound, the attraction I was looking for was right in front of me. “Robot Fight” is a brand-new experience, in which participants don robot suits, piloting the robot as they fight each other. Since its addition in April 2024, it has generated a great deal of attention and buzz in such a short time. The robot suit weighs roughly 15 kilograms, and while it does make your entire body feel heavy, that’s an important part of feeling like you’re one with the robot. You use the hand controls to punch and use special moves on your opponent, and whoever deals the most damage wins, but there is also an element of frustration that comes from not being able to move your body exactly as you’d like. But that just makes the thrill of victory and feeling of superiority all the greater, like you’re some kind of anime hero. Of course, the attraction takes safety into consideration as well, so children can also have fun battling it out without worry.

Massive thrills on a popular VR attraction

Next, I headed to the Attraction Zone on the 4th floor. This floor is home to LEKE VR, one of the world’s most popular virtual-reality rides and the only place in Japan where you can experience it (as of February 1, 2025). Four different LEKE VR machines can be found at RED° TOKYO TOWER. Among these, I decided to try “Flying Cinema”, known as the most thrilling of them all.

Among the options available, I went for “Super Big Pendulum”, which is said to be the most intense experience. I immediately got into the 360-degree rotating seat, put on a set of VR goggles, and got started. What appeared before my eyes was an urban landscape with towering skyscrapers. From there, the giant swing started to move, with my view going higher and higher into the sky, until my body swayed and spun in the air. The sheer intensity of the movement and speed caught me off guard to the point that I reflexively belted out an “Aaaaahhhhh!!!” The sight was unlike anything I’d ever seen, and the thrill was also unlike anything I’d ever experienced before. Your humble author, who just happens to be a roller coaster enthusiast, was hooked from the first time and couldn’t resist going for another round.

Still riding the high of that thrill, the next attraction I tried was “Red Light Green Light” (DARUMASAN GA KORONDA), a game that has its players holding their breath. It’s a survival game in which, if the Oni catches you moving, you’re instantly eliminated. You have to move through obstacles and reach the goal within the time limit, and stop moving when the Oni’s eyes are on you. You never know exactly when the Oni is going to turn its head around, and that tension is what gives this game its thrill. The satisfaction of outsmarting the Oni and making it to the goal was incredibly rewarding.

The fourth floor also offers plenty of augmented reality (AR) sports, such as “HADO”, where players wear head-mounted displays and arm sensors as they move around the field, engaged in a fierce battle. It’s easy to switch between different games while also keeping an eye on how crowded other attractions are.

A full day of fun, no matter the weather

The highlight of the Ultimate Zone on the 5th floor is “RED° E-MOTOR”, an attraction that combines both the virtual and real worlds. This cutting-edge simulator allows visitors to enjoy popular e-motorsports titles or experience a racing simulator. Motorsports fans will especially like this one, as it gives them the chance to sit in a real cockpit and feel what it’s like to be a racer.

The 5th floor also offers more mind-based sports, including poker, as well as a cafe and bar with a menu featuring RED° original foods and drinks. Taking a break while enjoying these original foods and drinks before deciding what to try next is a fun experience in and of itself, too. One of the most appealing things about RED° TOKYO TOWER is that its sprawling area of approximately 5,600 square meters is completely indoors, which means you can enjoy all its attractions regardless of the weather. In addition to the 1Day Passport, there is also a Night Passport that can be used after 5:00 PM, as well as a ticket that includes admission to the Tokyo Tower Main Deck, all of which allow re-entry until one hour before closing time. It’s a great place to spend plenty of time enjoying cutting-edge augmented-reality sports!
